The easiest way to protect files on Windows is to encrypt your files with AxCrypt.
AxCrypt encrypts sensitive data using a 128 bit algorithm. It may not be sufficient for military purpose but should smoothly prevent your colleagues and / or family to go around your sensitive files.
The software interface is reduced to its simplest expression since there is none. You can only access to it through the context menu of Windows Explorer. By setting up, AxCrypt add some options of every of its functionalities. You get an “encrypt” and an “encrypt and create an executable” buttons which proves handy to send a protected file to a friend who does not have the software and a “scramble and delete” that erases a file reliably.
In the case of encrypting an entire directory, the software will encrypt recursively every files in the directory and its subdirectories.
